How to Help Your Fashion-Challenged Roommate

By Amanda Cohen on November 16, 2016

Okay everyone, it is time to stop the lies and speak the truth. We have all lied to a roommate saying that we loved their outfit when, in fact, their outfit was actually pretty terrible (yikes)!

My experience with this has led me to believe that honesty is the best policy, but some people are a bit more sensitive than others and it makes it difficult to be more direct with them. So, how do we comfortably go about this situation? How do we help our fashion-backward roommates stay trendy and keep up with the newest fashion statements?

If you are like me, your closet is filled with the latest trends because (1) you love fashion, and (2) you have a shopping problem and should probably stop online shopping (lol). If you are also like me, you love the idea of lending out your clothes, but you are a little bit neurotic about making sure people return your items.

The thing is, your roommate lives either in the same room as you or in the same house/apartment as you, so you won’t have a problem getting your clothing back! When it comes to lending clothes to your not-so-trendy roommate you have to be smart about it. You want to help them stick to their own personal, unique style, but by also jazzing it up a bit.

Whenever I lend out my clothes, I always start with choosing a top. A sly way to go about getting your roommate to borrow your clothes is to ask what they like in your closet. Once they choose a few options, have them try the tops on! Whichever one they like best, lend it to the person and then get it back in the morning!

If you don’t like lending out your clothes, that is 100 percent fine because there are other ways that you can help your fashion-challenged roommate! If your roommate is struggling to pick out an outfit, tell her to look on Pinterest or look on fashion bloggers’ Instagram accounts, Tumblr accounts, or individual websites. Literally, all you need to do is type in “fashion” on Google or “#fashion #style” on Instagram and you guys will find thousands and thousands of hits!

Also, even though I am kind of embarrassed to do this, but I’m am going to make a personal plug for myself and ask to you potentially direct your roommate to my Uloop fashion articles (I promise they are helpful)!

Okay, so what is trending these days? I want to make sure you all know about the latest fashion trends so that you don’t steer your roommate in the wrong direction!

•Black ripped jeans (always in style, and always super flattering)

•Off-the-shoulder tops (any color, tight or loose, looks great with just about anything)

•High neckline tops (once again … any color, tight or loose, and looks great in sweater-form)

•Camouflage (looks great as jackets, tops, pants, and chokers, plus you can get creative with the color scheme that you use)

•Booties (comfortable, but also give you a bit of a lift if you are looking for some height)

•Chokers (thick, thin, jeweled, or cloth, you really can’t go wrong)

Those are only a few of the latest fashion trends that you can tell your roommate about! Now, if she decides that she is ready to refresh her wardrobe, where should you tell her to shop? Here is a list of my favorite online shopping spots that will not disappoint you or your roommate!

I know that this list might seem overwhelming, but no matter what your roommate’s personal style is, she is guaranteed to find something in this list of shops. Also, don’t be afraid to check out the local boutiques around you! For all of my Ann Arbor readers, you should check out Pitaya, Verbena, and Bivouac! For my readers who attend different schools, search for local boutiques online!

If your roommate does not like to shop on her own, you should encourage her to sign up for a subscription to Trunk Club! Trunk Club is a company started by Nordstrom in which you can get your own personal stylist who sends you a trunk whenever you request it.

Your stylist gets to know you and asks about your budget, your personal style, what items you are looking for, and how often you would like to receive clothing. I use Trunk Club and I am honestly so glad because shopping can be such a hassle. Plus, for those of you who have trouble with fashion, let the experts help you! No stress, no fashion mess!

Remind your roommate to accessorize with jewelry, some fun eye makeup, and a cool purse!
